Montage Sequence

In the montage sequence, the shots are meant to be arranged so that they follow each other in a succession. A process where a number of shots are woven and arranged together to communicate a story and a lot of information in a short time. We were allowed to pick our concepts for this, I based mine surrounding the word Liminality.

Liminality: the transitional period or phase of a rite of passage

A liminal state is a transitional one, being the crossing of one thing to another thing. Whether that thing is the crossing of a location, the transition of careers, the changing of mental state, social life, war and peace, sickness to health, or life and death. I was really interested in the concept being applied both physically and vague or abstractly. ‘Rites of passage’ also are stages like pregnancy, childhood, ‘aging’ out of childhood, and marriage. Territorial transitions are also when one (a person or a being or maybe even a season of nature) moves from one geographic area to another. Some other examples are given where hallways or tunnels or stairways as liminal spaces, college is a liminal stage of life (the transition from adolescence to adulthood), people that come in and out of your life, an egg or moth or frogs are liminal beings as they have stages of transition. When a person crosses a new threshold or boundary, they become separated from the previous point and ushered into the unknown next point.

 Title Sequence

For our title sequence, we had to create a title sequence for a book that has not yet been made into a movie. A title sequence is something films or television shows present their title, cast, and production team with visuals and sound. It can set the tone for the movie, introduce a character, foreshadow a theme, tell a backstory, and establish a setting.

I decided to pick a Korean graphic novel called Dam of The Forest, it has an interesting premise with a nice aesthetic and color scheme. The story is about a boy who finds out he has powers, one of the most obvious in the story is his ability to enhance growth, plants specifically, in the majority of the story. However, once he realizes he has this power he also suddenly stops aging, never looking past the age of 14. He also finds that time continues to pass around him, people he knows to pass away and the world changes around him, but he stays the same. It explores the psychology of immortality.

Stop Motion Animation

Our stop-motion was a group project, the members being classmates Ashtyn, Jaron, Tori, and myself. We were allowed to choose our concept or narrative. We just needed to make sure the animation was at least 30 seconds long, 24 frames per second. For stop-motion to work a physical object or model, is moved slightly in between individually photographed frames, put together giving the illusion of movement when the frames are played as a sequence.

We decided on a paper cut-out animation in a fantasy medieval setting. The story of some adventurers who come across a slime cat creature and discuss keeping it. Some are hesitant, some are on board immediately. The cat turns into a scary monster and eats some creature that tries to attack the adventurers.
