Stop Motion Project Page

We were tasked to create a stop motion animation that is at least 30 seconds long, with imported frame shots at 24 frames per second. So for 30 seconds of video, which was the assignment requirement, we needed 360 shots.

The group, Jaron, Ashtyn, Tori, and I, settled on a story where 3 adventurers go into a cave and encounter a weird slime creature. There's disagreement on whether to keep it, as one party member finds it scary, and the other party member finds it a threat. A real threat steals the show and starts to attack the cave and the slime creature saves them, earning the collective's trust.

Storyboard: Made by Jaron

Character Sketches

Jaron drew 2 characters, one his and one mine. My character from a short story restyled. I colored her in On the character sheet

This Design I'd made of her for the game Utopia was repurposed as the reference for Jaron to draw the fantasy version of her in this project

Jaron's character

Tori designed the bat and we all discussed what kind of creature we wanted it to be

We decided to go a more wolf bat direction. We wanted it to be pointed edges and not round. Since round elements tend to give a more innocent impress design-wise. We also didn't want to much detail because this creature was meant to be a mindless threat. To much detail or any impression of a conscience could possibly make the audience feel bad for it once Bebe ate the threat

I sketched out the slime creature transformation, which Ashtyn finalized and colored

Character Designs

I did the color script and colored her in

Tori's frog character Freddrick and his walk cycle

Final monster bat

Bebe the monster
made by Ashtyn

As a group, we brainstormed what kind of creature Bebe would be. There were many loose sketches that were potential but we decided this design went with the cute pet-like route the antlers gave us an opportunity to give it pointed edges once it transformed.

Background Design

I made the backgrounds and kept track of color and design

In the group, I assigned work to make sure everyone had an agreeable amount of tasks and made the work schedule to make sure we would have enough time. The shoot was set up in my house where we blocked off the windows and had controlled lighting. I gave instructions on what types of files to print, and settings to print in the building. Then we cut out every piece, asset, and character with Exacto knives.

We used a tripod, Jaron's phone, and an app to collect all the shots. Each of us took turns taking pictures of specific scenes.
